Kanopy is a collection of movies and documentaries. They can be watched online or through the Kanopy app. The app is available for iOS and Android. It works with Apple TV, Roku, and Chromecast.

Kanopy offers classic films from The Criterion Collection, PBS, independent and world cinema, and curated lists like The Texas Collection.

Sign up for Kanopy in a web browser:

This process is similar to using the Kanopy app for iOS or Android. We recommend signing up for the first time in a web browser.

  1. Go to Kanopy in a supported browser.

  2. Select Get Started.

  3. Select Find Your Library.

  4. Search for Austin Public Library by name. You may select a branch location or Austin Public Library - (TX). Click Select this library.

  5. Add your Library Card number and Library Card PIN/Password (the same information you use to log in to MyAPL). If needed, learn how to reset your PIN.

  6. Create your Kanopy account. Enter your name, email address, and password. Then select Sign Up. Or, use your Apple or Google account: Select Sign Up with Apple or Sign Up with Google and follow the instructions.

  7. Begin watching films!

Next time, you will log in using your email address and the new password, or with your Apple/Google account. You only need your Library Card number and PIN for the initial setup.

Checkouts, Loan Periods & Renewals

  • Checkout Limit: 6 tickets per month. Tickets reset on the 1st of each month. Loading and playing 4+ seconds of a film counts as a play credit.
  • Tickets and Loan Periods: A show or film's running time may determine how many tickets are used and how long the viewing period is. This will be listed underneath the title, next to the number of tickets required.
  • Holds: Films are always available—no holds required!
  • Renewals: No renewals, but you can get the film again immediately if you have tickets left.
  • "Free": No tickets needed to view Kanopy Kids videos and "Unlimited Viewing" sets.
