The item does not have to be returned to the shelves first. You can immediately check an item out again as long as the item has not been placed on hold by another customer.
If you've already renewed the item the maximum number of times, you can check it out again as long as:
- You present the item in person at any Austin Public Library location, so it can be checked in and checked back out to you.
- There are no holds on the item.
