In 2011 the Texas State Library grant funding for the Austin Public Library’s Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service was drastically reduced. Our eight-person ILL department was dissolved, so two staff members in the Reference Department at the Central Library assumed the added responsibilities of ILL part time. Since then, APL has made changes to reduce the cost and workload enough to make ILL a sustainable service for our customers. A significant change is that customers can request only print books and one print book at a time.

The current ILL service enables Reference staff to evaluate all ILL requests from customers to determine the best method for obtaining the book the customer is seeking. In many cases, APL already owns the books requested, or they are on order for our collection.

Please see the Interlibrary Loan page for more information about the service and other options for locating materials we do not have at Austin Public Library.
