Enjoy eBooks, audiobooks and videos using OverDrive on your Chromebook. An app is available (described below), but it is difficult to use and videos cannot be viewed through the app. We recommend that you instead use the instructions, how to use OverDrive without an app.

You might want the app if you want to download audiobooks and then listen to them offline (where you do not have internet access). This cannot be done without the app. There are also some books that are not available without the app, so your selection will be slightly larger if you use it.

Download and set up the app (a one-time process)

  1. On your Chromebook, go to the Chrome Web Store, search for OverDrive and add the free app.

  2. Open the app, tap Sign Up and then tap Sign up using library card.
  3. On the Find your library screen, in the box enter: Austin Public Library. Then tap Go.
  4. Tap one of our branches—it doesn't matter which one.
  5. Enter your Card Number and password. Tap Sign In.

Borrow and use titles

  1. Find a title to borrow:
    • Click the magnifying glass iconto search by title, author or topic.
    • Click Subjects or Collections to browse.

Note: Navigating the app is difficult. If you have a mouse, you can scroll down using your mouse's scroll wheel. If you do not have a mouse, move the cursor using the track pad to any white space within the app or to the right edge of the app, where there is a hidden scroll bar. Click-and-hold anywhere on the track pad while simultaneously using another finger to swipe up and down on the track pad to move up and down the page.

The font size is small on the app and there is no way to increase it, but you can change the font size on books once they have been borrowed and downloaded.

Once you have a list of items...

Check the banner to see if the item is available. The Audiobook "Being a Beast" says Available at the top. The eBook "Fates and Furies" says Wait List at the top. To learn more about a title or read a sample, tap its cover.

A "Play" icon with the label, "VIDEO" can only be streamed; videos cannot be downloaded.

  2. Click Borrow if available. If the item has a wait list, you can place a hold to get in line. If prompted, sign in using your Library Card number and PIN.

Tip: You can have 10 checkouts and 10 holds in OverDrive at a time.

  3. The message "This title is now checked out to you" appears at the top in red. Tap Loans in this message.

Tip: You can see Loans anytime by tapping the OverDrive loans icon, which looks like 3 books on a shelf in the top right.

  4. For Audiobooks, tap Download MP3 audiobook.

For eBooks, tap Download and pick EPUB eBook.

The "Fates and Furies" is shown. The Choose a Format menu is activated and the EPUB option is selected.

You can also choose the Kindle format if you'd like to use the Kindle app on your Chromebook or to send the book to a Kindle device. Start at Step 5 on these instructions.
  5. Items will load in the app. To use them, click OverDrive menu and then click Bookshelf from the slide-out menu.
  6. Click the item to open it. Audiobooks show options automatically. For eBooks, click in the center of your device to see options, including:
the settings icon = for styling options (font size, line spacing, etc.)
the bookmark icon  = to bookmark your place
the table of contents icon = to see the Table of Contents and other title information
